Introduction of PVC Health Insurance Card

A material of “health insurance card of Kyokai Kempo” issued by Japan Health Insurance Association (or Kyokai Kempo) has been shifted from paper to plastics since 2003. Even in the plastics, various materials such as PETG, PVC, and mixed PETG/PVC have been used (before 2008, Government-managed health insurance). Each material has its own characteristics, but, considering the printability and recyclability of the material, the card material thoroughly changed into PVC as a result of bidding held in August 2010.

This time, around 800,000 cards were ordered because of a transition of material change. The number of insured persons hovers around the level of 34 million. The number of cards newly issued is estimated to be about 9 million per year.
